Exterior hardscaping in Ontario has to deal with a harder climate than most. Understanding what the weather does to a surface is the reason we spend so much time on what goes underneath it.
Freeze-thaw cycles
Water that sits in or under a surface expands as it freezes. Southern Ontario swings across the freezing point repeatedly each winter, so surfaces are worked hard every season.
Snow, ice and de-icing salt
Shovels, plows and de-icing products all act on exterior surfaces. Finish choice and how you maintain it both matter here.
Heavy rainfall
Summer storms move a lot of water quickly. Where that water goes is decided by the grades set before anything is poured or laid.
Drainage
Surface water should move away from the house, the garage and the walkway. Low spots collect water, and standing water is the start of most problems.
Ground movement
Clay soils common across the GTA swell and shrink with moisture. A compacted granular base spreads load and reduces the effect of that movement.
Seasonal temperature swings
Concrete expands and contracts. Control joints and expansion joints give it planned places to move instead of random ones.
Proper excavation, compacted base preparation, grading and careful installation practices are important for any exterior hardscaping built in Canadian conditions. No installation is immune to weather, but the work done below the surface is what gives a project its best chance.
